Three people died and six were injured in a horrific eight-vehicle accident on Silkaatsnek near Hartbeespoort on Tuesday.
A truck and seven cars collided around 14:20 on the R511 near the R513 crossing. The cause of the accident is still unclear and a police investigation is underway.
“It happened so quickly. I had just passed an oncoming truck when I heard a loud crash and in my rearview mirror, I saw the car behind me crumpling into the truck and the truck overturning. And then other cars crashed into the scene. It was horrific,” Yolandie Venter, an eyewitness, told Kormorant.
“I don’t know what happened. I did not see any vehicles overtaking or doing anything funny. We stopped immediately and called emergency services. We tried to assist people until emergency services arrived. It was absolute carnage. My heart goes out to the people who lost loved ones in the accident.”
Hartbeespoort Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) responded to the accident. “Three people were sadly declared dead on the scene and six people had sustained injuries. They were transported to hospitals in Brits,” HEMS spokesperson Leandre Spies said.
Police spokesperson Constable Ben Moabi said police were investigating the cause of the accident.
