Two children, aged three and 10, died after eating a family meal in Sonop near Brits on Friday.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, a 32-year-old woman cooked a meal consisting of pap, chicken feet and wheat, for her family as well as her neighbours’ three children. “After the meal, everybody went to sleep. In the early morning hours of Saturday, the children became ill and started vomiting. An ambulance was called but one of the children was declared dead at the scene,” he said.
The other children and the woman who cooked the meal were taken to Brits Hospital. Another child died in hospital and two children were later transferred to George Mukhari Hospital.
“Investigations into the incident, including collection and testing of food samples are underway,” Mogkwabone said.
The police, Madibeng Municipality and Department of Home Affairs earlier this month embarked on ongoing blitz operations at spaza shops following recent deaths of children and adults as a result of expired and illegal food in these outlets. The Blitz operations aim to establish whether the wholesale and spaza shops are compliant in respect to business licences, certificates for perishable foods and illicit trade.
During recent operations, several shops in the Brits area were found to be non-compliant.
